Again, and again they struck Him [Jesus] on the head with a staff and spit on Him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to Him. And when they had mocked Him, they took off the purple robe and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led him out to crucify Him. – Mark 15:19-20
Even while mocking Jesus they prove with every word and with every deed that Jesus truly was the Messiah. Shakespeare said in one of his plays, “The lady doth protest too much, me thinkest.” When one protests too much, it proves the point valid. And here we have the Romans making such a huge fuss over a Jew, which they considered dogs, perhaps they protest too much and prove the point.
So, why is this important? Well, I have been asked time and time again, how can I think the Bible is reliable and Jesus true? Well, instances like this, which were verified not only in Scripture but also extra canonically that Jesus was treated in this manner. Why would a Jew, of all people, be given this special treatment by the Romans, it was unheard of in that time. No, they would have sufficed to cut Him down and throw Him in a ditch.
However, Jesus because of the prophesy had to die in a certain manner, upon the cross as it was foretold. And so, with every stroke and with every mocking bow, the Romans prove who Jesus truly was. 1 Cor 1:27 states, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” And it is proven in the way they chose to treat Jesus the Savior of the world.
Now, for us, what that means is that the Bible is trustworthy and true. More than that, when people make a mockery of my faith, I stand tall and strong because perhaps they protest too much and prove the point. Why would an atheist even care about the Bible and what it says? Why would they care what I believe and get so riled up as to cast insults upon my belief, well it is because it is all true, that’s why.
So, the next time you find yourself in a great discussion and someone chooses to hurl insults at you because of your faith, or they mock your beliefs, just remember that is confirmation of what is believe is true. Stand tall and firm in your belief and let the foolish things of the world bring men low. Put that little smile on your face at take it all in and realizes that with every insult that prove the Word of God to be truth.
To God is the Glory,
