And he sent you on a mission saying, “Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.” Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?
“But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.” 1 Sam 15:17-20
Saul in his very reply to Samuel refutes what the Lord has said to him. He has brought back the king. So, Saul has done what is right in his own eyes. He has taken and twisted what the Lord had said to fit his own thoughts and desires. He had spared the king and the choice live stock because he thought that is what God wanted instead of just doing what God said.
I must not be guilty of what Saul has done. I must fulfill the purpose and Word God has given to me in this life. I can find that Word in the Bible and only there. I cannot twist its words or claim that it is out of date. I cannot decide that one part is good and that’s what I want to do and not follow the rest. I am either all in or all out, just as it was with Saul.
The Scriptures are God breathed for sure. It is the inerrant Word of God; it is as He would have it to be. So, I must obey each part of what is told to me, not just the parts that I like. I must be willing to give up all sins in my life, not just the ones that don’t apply to me. God wants our obedience to His Word, “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” 1 Sam 15:22b
When I obey His Word and commands what I find is, that life is so much better. My life is free from worry and doubt. My life is full and content, even though I am not comfortable all the time. When I obey God, I live the “Good Life.” That is why God wants us to obey, He knows what is best for us and what will fill our hearts with true peace and joy.
Today, I will follow His commands and not just the ones I like, but all of them. I will not twist the scriptures to suit my needs and wants in life. And I will glorify Him in my obedience that I might have a piece of the God Life.
To God be the Glory,
