For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me. – Col 1:29
Paul writing to the Church at Colossae and on this occasion was looking to teach and inspire the believers there to even greater things. He also wanted them to steer clear of any problems that would arise amongst the people. In this verse he is calling for them to continue their labor just as he has.
Two words garner my attention in this verse: labor and striving. Labor means working and not just working but hard work. The word in Greek, κοπιάω, means to bring forth effort. When I worked in the summer bailing and stacking hay, I learned what the word labor was all about. The second word accompanies the first, in case we didn’t get it with the word labor we have the word striving. In the Greek this word means to compete, fight, or struggle with an emphasis on effort.
Do I strive and labor for the Lord? Is it hard for me to accomplish any of my tasks He has called me to do? It is true that God will play to our talents and gifts given to us; however, He wants us to Labor and Work in the kingdom. When we do something with effort and must exhaust ourselves in something, we appreciate it more.
When we strive and work in the kingdom for His purpose we appreciate the grace given to us more. As we strive for souls and we labor for the harvest, we appreciate what had to happen so that I could attain this salvation. When I labor for the Lord it keeps Him in the forefront of my mind.
So many people tell me, oh well I got too busy. However, when we are striving and laboring for Jesus, we realize that there is always room for Christ and His glory. There is always room for the Gospel and to show others His tender mercies. We just must make it a priority to strive and labor for Him. I must adjust my priorities in life to make Him the number one priority in life. Without Him and the Gospel everything in life is vein deceit. Let’s strive and work for Him today. Find someone who needs the Gospel and share life with them, strive to win souls for Jesus.
