Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips. – Col 3:5-8
What a dirty laundry list of which I think I have been guilty of each and every one in my life. God wants us to rid these things from our lives, not because they are wrong and there are rules, but because these bring us disgrace, guilt, hate and discord in our lives. Believe it or not when we follow the Lord’s way, we live the “Good” life.
When we toss out the earthly fleshly desires, which only bring temporary happiness, we gain an eternal joy. Joy is better than happiness because it sustains us through the tough times, when happiness is hidden away. Joy, then, in the good times drives happiness to new heights and new glories, if only we would trust what He says is good.
The next two verses in Colossians really sums it up:
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. – Col 3: 9-11
We are being renewed, throwing out the flesh each and every day. We trade it for the grace and mercy of God’s love and forgiveness in our lives. He wants us to live well and to have joy. God doesn’t say it will be perfect or without pain, but it will be a far sight better than the way we live now if we stay in the flesh and sin of this world.
Just imagine, a life without guilt, shame, sorrow or hate. That sounds like a pretty good thing to me. As a matter of fact, it is a big reason why I have left the fleshly things behind and now focus on things above. By fulfilling His will, I am finding those heights of joy and peace I never knew existed.
Grace and Peace by with You Today,
