Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your heart, remove the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your hearts to the Lord and serve Him alone; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
1 Sam 7:3
When Israel turned back to the Lord, Samuel had one important instruction for them, if your serious, then you need to put away your idols. All the distractions in life and all the things that are pulling you away from my love.
In my life, that means putting away my distractions that take my attention away from the Lord. I am not talking about taking away our leisure items, but I am talking about when we watch 3.5 hours our television every night before we go to bed. I am talking about our love for sports that prevents our families from being with our Church families. I am talking about anything that takes most of our time, energy and money.
These things are the idols in our lives. They steal not only our time and our money but also our hearts from the Lord. My mentor, James once said, “Where people spend their time and money is where you will find their hearts.” That is a trustworthy statement and in today’s culture of spending thousands of dollars on televisions and phones, we begin to see where our hearts lie.
So, we must repent and turn back to the Lord, but only if we are willing to let go of our idols. We must put those things away; we must destroy them in our lives. If we continue to allow our attention to be taken from the Lord, it will not be long before our lives follow the path that our heart has laid out for us.
Today, I repent. I repent Lord of the things that steal my attention away from you. I repent of my idols and my idolatry. I refuse to let the things of this world take one more minute of my time and energy and another cent of my money that belongs to you. I repent Lord and praise you alone. Thank you for your loving patience and glorious grace that lead me home and to the Truth.
