“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. Rom 12:20-21
Romans 12 is probably one of the best chapters on what a Christians stands for and ought to live their life according to. There is great advice for all people of faith in these words but none stronger than the quote above. It flies in the face of conventional wisdom. It requires the reader to be humble and not to take offense when offense is given. It calls us not to be vengeful but to provide grace to our enemies.
How do you know the Bible is true? This is a question I get so often I cannot remember how many times. Romans 12 is why the scripture is true. What man in his right mind would seek grace instead of justice? It is in every heart to repay for a wrong, this is why there are so many wars and peace does not persist in this world. But God being ever the wiser of us all, buck conventional wisdom and gives us the true measure of peace in life.
Overcome evil with good, do not take vengeance, try to live at peace with everyone, live in harmony with one another, don’t be proud, love must be sincere; these are the many pieces of advice given in Romans 12. None of these suits today’s society but points in another direction.
I must admit that I have a hard time with these verses as well because in my own heart I want justice to be served when it is owed. Well, unless that justice must be dispensed upon me and then I want grace; I am a hypocrite in my own mind and must repent. For if God has measured grace out to me, a sinner, how much more then should I offer grace up to others. For this is the true nature of peace and forgiveness, it is grace.
If you want to know how to get rid of the past and the things that haunt you, offer up grace. If you want to let go of the wickedness of your own actions, offer up grace. See, grace is where forgiveness meets mercy and gives what is not deserved and that is love and peace. Christ did this for us on the cross and now I can do that for myself and others by offering up that same forgiveness and mercy to others through goodness and kindness even though they persecute me.
Today is always a good day for grace, mercy and forgiveness. Let someone who doesn’t deserve it have it today. Fly in the face of what everything in the culture tells us to do and follow the will of God. Test Him and see if it does not offer up peace and love in your life. Test the Scripture and find out its truth today.
To God be the Glory,
