He went in and said to them, “Why all the commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at Him. – Mark 5:39-40
Jesus had come to heal a sick girl, but she had passed away while He was traveling to her. In this proclamation Jesus announces that no one is dead unless He says so. What a true statement this is all the way to eternity as well. No one will face eternal death unless Jesus says so. But then the people laughed at Him because they did not know who He was, the master of life and death.
I have had those moments in life as well where I have found myself laughing at Jesus. When the call came to go to seminary and get my degree, I laughed at Jesus and said, what would I do that for? When the call came to be a pastor, I laughed at Jesus and said no one will take me seriously will they? When Jesus said, to lay my troubles down at His feet thought, and I trusted Him with that and these things, I no longer laughed but was amazed at what He could do.
It’s not that we doubt, but its that when Christ calls us to something we laugh because we think in human terms not in Christ’s. We cannot comprehend the future that God has laid out for us and He doesn’t reveal it to us because we would run in fear. But if we just reach out with our hands to take a piece of His cloak, as the woman with bleeding did, we will find that our faith is rewarded and we will stand amazed.
We have a saying in the military, “The difficult we do now, the impossible just take a little longer.” While it is a bit of an exaggeration, with Christ it is not. With Christ all things, according to His will, are possible in my life. All things can be accomplished in heaven and on earth if I just have faith and move on His calling. I will obey and stand amazed at His power in my life.
I don’t know about you, but I am sick and tired of my lack luster ability to look at the world and see the change God has for all of the people. I will no longer look upon the world with my own eyes and understand but with God’s. I will see potential in people and I will no longer laugh at what is impossible instead I will look it dead in the eye and say, “Jesus has got this.” And then I will stand amazed at His power!
