A furious squall came up and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” – Mark 4:37-38
The disciples were still not yet aware of the true nature of Jesus yet, but they would soon learn as Jesus rebukes the waves and the wind and they become terrified. They don’t see and so they do not trust in Him just yet. But there will be a time when they see and they trust, but this won’t fully happen until after Jesus death and resurrection. Instead they continue to doubt because they do not want to see.
When I hit scary times in my life, do I doubt? Are the waves too much for me to handle and the wind to much for me to believe? I must trust in Jesus, He is the Son of God. Just as Jesus was always taken care of, He also takes care of me. For if He can rebuke the wind and the waves, surely, He can rebuke the scary stuff in my life.
However, it takes trust. I have to fully trust in Him; I have to have faith that He is doing what is best for me. And then I have to walk the path, no matter how scary it may seem, no matter how difficult it may be. In the walk though, it will get easier and He will continue to win the battles for me as long as I continue to trust and continue to step out.
I wonder sometimes, if Peter would have not doubted, how long would he have walked on the water to Christ. It is the same in my life, when things get scary I want to take my eyes off from Christ and try to establish some control, but I forget that He is the one that rebukes the waves and I have nothing to fear, I can now just trust and know.
Today, take a look at the scary things in life. Then in the name of Jesus rebuke them and know that He will win the day for you. Each day when we face the struggle and face temptation, rebuke it in the name of Jesus and it will be done if we have faith and believe. That means we make up our minds that it is true and then act on that conviction. We cannot say we trust Jesus and then stay in the boat, no! We must step out onto the water, in the scary place and trust in Christ, keeping our eyes upon Him and knowing He has power over the wind and waves in our lives.
