O grave, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? – 1 Cor 15:55
One of my favorite verses in the Bible, it reminds me that death is not the end. I have no reason to fear death. In verse 56 - 57 it says, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I have no reason to fear death or sin anymore because I have been set free!
Death can definitely be scary. Many of us want to live a full and long life, getting to see our children grow and our grandchildren perhaps even more generations. But, what if we don’t. I think this is the fear of death more than anything else, it is missing out on something. However, what is gained far outweighs what is lost.
Do I fear death? Not any longer. I welcome death as a friend for it is the freedom from what is mortal into what is immortal. It is the releasing of the perishable to what will be eternal with Christ. For me to live is Christ, for me to die is gain (Phil 1:21). There is nothing this world can do to me any longer. This is the true hope that I find in Christ, that nothing can kill me. In the great words of Ben Ken-obi, “If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”
Death can only create fear if we allow it to have power. Death can only have power if we are found in sin. We can only be found in sin, if we have not accepted Christ as our savior. You see, for when I have Christ and have been baptized in Him, then I have died already. That is what Baptism is, it is death, burial and resurrection into a new life in Christ, leaving what is perishable behind and being raised into eternity, even while I still live.
So, where are you today? Are you found in Christ, are you set free of your sin, are you raised into eternity? Or, are you found still in fear of death, with no hope for a future? Are you still found in your sin and shame where there is no hope but this world? If it is the later, then find someone who knows Jesus, shake the chains of sin and death and become a new creation in Him. Come and feel the freedom that is in Christ. If you are the former, then share this Good News with someone today, give them life by your actions and words. Give them the gift of Grace and Mercy that comes from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
