Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.” – 1 Sam 11:1
It isn’t long after Saul is chosen in secret by God to be king of Israel and the Ark returned to Israel. And yet again we see the people so quick to abandon God’s plan and God himself for those who have power over the body. They fear men more than God.
I have to be courageous in this life. Without courage, I will blow where the wind blows, never anchoring myself on anything and never being to stand for anything. I cannot understand nor stand for Good Gospel or wisdom if I do not have courage. So, I must be courageous in my faith, I will not fear men more than God. I do not fear those who can hurt the body, but the one who can destroy the soul.
This means when the tough times come, and they will come, I will stand for the Lord. I will stand on His promises. He has told me that He is with me, no matter where I go. He has told me that His love never fails. He never gives up on the hard luck cases like me. And because of His promises, it doesn’t matter who stands at the gates and who tells me they are going to destroy me; their threats are empty, I stand with God.
I will stand with courage when the world comes knocking at my door. I will stand on the promise that God’s Word is truth. When I am found in the truth I am free from men and their rules. I am free from any who would tell me I am wrong. I will have the courage to stand and face the enemies of God’s Holiness with faith, hope and love.
Love, compassion and joy outlast any other method of motivation. They will defeat fear, they will defeat man’s wisdom and they will defeat man’s knowledge, because they never change. Just as God is eternal, so too is these are eternal, as it tells me in 1 Cor 13:13, “And these three remain, faith, hope and love, and the greatest is love.” So today, take heart and embolden your courage in the Lord and He will grow you in faith, hope and love.
