All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service. – 1 Sam 14:52
Saul was at war with everyone, with every nation that surrounded Israel. His war was not because of his enemies but of his constant separation with God. He did not follow the ways of God and even when he made a declaration before God he did not follow through with it, because it was his son Jonathan that had sinned.
To be at peace I must first be at peace with God’s will and plan in my life. When I fall outside of His will, then I find that I am not at peace or at rest. I am struggling against the waters that flow in God’s direction. To make life easier and to be at peace, I must follow the waters that lead to God, I must go with the flow.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in hear, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt 11:28-29) God wants me to find rest in my life. He does not want me to struggle all of my days or constantly be at war with people. Yes, there will come times when I will have to stand against wickedness, but it is God who will fight those battles, not me.
When I am in God’s will, the struggles disappear and His love surrounds me and makes it as if nothing can touch me. I love being drawn to this peace in life and I think most people are the same, they do not want to have to battle day after day, they want peace and rest.
Do garner this peace though, we must repent and not be like King Saul. We have to follow the Lord’s ways. We must be careful about what we say or promise because God’s holds us accountable for our words. “For by your words you will be acquitted, or by your words you will be condemned.” (Matt 12:37) So, my prayer is that the Spirit would take hold and let me only speak the Words of Life and leave all other things behind.
Won’t you join with me today in speaking words of life to others. Give them the same hope you have in the gracious peace that is found in Christ our Lord. Let them bask in the same rest we have when we are found in His will and Grace.
